Major Highways

Interstate Highway (I.H.) 10, which extends across the county in an east-west direction, provides excellent access to metropolitan centers in the area.  The eastern and western extremities of the county along I-10 are approximately 25 miles from Beaumont and Houston, respectively.  Four major state highways also serve the county.  State highway (S.H.) 146, which intersects I-10 in Mont Belvieu, connects Mont Belvieu with U.S. 90 to the north and Baytown to the south.  S.H. 61 connects Anahuac to I-10 to the north and proceeds to U.S. 90.  S.H. 65 runs east and west from Anahuac to S.H. 124 in Stowell, which S.H. 124 then connects the Winnie-Stowell area with I-10 and S.H. 73 to the north, and proceeds south to S.H. 87, which provides access to Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston Island.

The proposed Grand Parkway project, a planned 155-mile freeway that will encircle the Houston area, will extend through the western portion of Chambers County.  This will provide a more direct access to the county from other parts of the region. Since its completion, the Fred Hartman Bridge, an eight-lane suspension bridge that connects Baytown and LaPorte, has proven to have a major impact on the development in West Chambers County.

This network of throughways provides Chambers County with an extremely high degree of accessibility with the regional market.  Coupled with the area’s strategic location between Greater Houston, Beaumont, and Port Arthur markets, the highway system will increase demand for industrial and commercial property within the county.

Rail Facilities

Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads serve the western portion of Chambers County.  These railways provide links to the Missouri Pacific Railway in Liberty County and offers service to industrial tracts in the area.

Airports

Chambers County has one (1) private airport and two (2) county airports for light planes.  The Tom Jenkins Memorial Airport in Winnie has a 3,675 ft. lighted runway with fueling stations and hangers.  The Oscar F. Nelson, Jr. Memorial Airport in Anahuac has 3,003 ft. of lighted runway with fueling stations and hangers as well.

The west side of Chambers County has two major airports located within 30 miles of the area.  The George Bush Intercontinental Airport in north Houston and William P. Hobby Airport in south Houston provide passenger and cargo services throughout the United States and to 29 foreign markets.  The Jefferson County Airport in Beaumont is approximately 30 miles from the eastern portion of the county and it too provides passenger and cargo service.  In addition, Houston and Beaumont are served by every major overnight delivery service in the United States.

Ports

With Chambers County having 295 square miles of water, there is no lack of shipping opportunities in the area.  The nearest navigable waterway (40 feet) is the Intra Coastal Waterway, located 11 miles south of Winnie on State Highway 124.  Kiva Construction and Galveston Bay Construction/Thornton Marine in Oak Island provide public Barge docks. The Houston Ship Channel, which is operated by the Houston Port Authority, and the Port of Beaumont are both located approximately 35 minutes from the west and east sides of the county, respectively.  In addition to these public ports, there are many privately owned shipping terminals in the Houston-Galveston and Beaumont-Port Arthur.
