County Attorney Quicklinks:
Duties

The County Attorney’s Office of Chambers County handles numerous aspects of law, but the primary duty is prosecution.  The County Attorney is charged with the prosecution of Class “A” and Class “B” misdemeanors in the County Court, as well as the prosecution of Class “C” offenses in the six Justice of the Peace Courts.  In addition, the Office handles Juvenile cases for offenders age ten through sixteen.

The County Attorney also provides legal advice to the Commissioner’s Court and other elected officials and department heads who seek advice related to their official duties.

In 2009, Scott Peal took on the role of County Public Information Officer, as relates to Chapter 552 of the Texas Government Code (the “Texas Public Information Act”).  Open government is an extremely important aspect for citizens to insure legality and fairness in their government, and through the County Attorney’s Office, all Public Information Requests for documents held by Chambers County are processed.

Principles

The County Attorney’s Office is dedicated to treating each individual fairly, in relation to the facts of the case, the criminal history, and the circumstances applicable to each defendant.  Deterrence of future crime is only possible through equal enforcement of the law.  With that goal, each defendant is held accountable for the offense committed, within the range of punishment for that offense.
