Duties of the Indigent Health Department

The Indigent Health Department administers the County Indigent Health Care Program and Social Service programs to assist eligible county residents. 

The County Indigent Health Care Program is a state mandated medical program for county residents in need of basic medical care that do not qualify for other state or federal health care assistant programs. 

The Indigent Health office follows the rules and procedure established in the Health And Safety Code, Title 2. Health to comply with its responsibilities to provide medically necessary health care assistance. For more information visit the Chapter 61. Indigent Health Care and Treatment Act page.

When funding is available, the Indigent Health Department also provides assistance with groceries, utility payments, rent, mortgage and prescription drugs (residence and income limits do apply). 

Eligibility Requirements for Health Care Assistance

  • Lives in Chambers County, but resides outside of the service area of a public hospital district
  • Income level at or below 21% of federal poverty guidelines
  • Countable resources are less than $2000
  • Not eligible for any other state or federal health care assistance programs
